Senegal's presidential frontrunners end campaigns amid ahead of vote


  • Friday was the last day of campaigning allowed in Senegal’s tightly contested election, which will take place on Sunday.

  • Large crowds came out in Dakar and Mbour in support of two of the favored presidential candidates. This race is expected to be the closest in the country’s history.

  • Amadou Ba, a career politician from the same political party as President Macky Sall, is going up against Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a popular young politician backed by Ousmane Sonko.

South Africa's deadly love affair with guns

  • Mr. Mlotshwa says his guns - he would not disclose how many he owned - are strictly for protection, a job he feels the police and government have failed dismally at Johannesburg resident Lynette Oxley agrees and says such dangers must be faced head on.

  • Her organization, Girls on Fire, mostly helps women who have been raped, attacked, robbed, or experienced some level of violence. The country's rate of sexual violence is among the highest in the world.

  • "Gun culture in South Africa is about self-defense and necessity." South African law states that most people with a gun license can carry a firearm if it is concealed.

Markus Jooste: Former Poundland owner's ex-boss dies of gunshot wound in South Africa

  • Markus Jooste, the former head of the Steinhoff retail group that was at the center of a huge corporate fraud case in South Africa, has died.

  • Police said Mr. Jooste succumbed to a gunshot wound in hospital, with local media reporting he shot himself at his home in the southern town of Hermanus.

  • "The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated," police spokesperson Andre Traut said. The Steinhoff group had included European retailers such as the UK's Poundland.

SA speaker says corruption probe politically motivated

  • The probe was sparked by accusations that Ms. Mapisa-Nqakula had solicited bribes in return for awarding contracts when she served as defense minister.

  • Mr. May said Ms. Mapisa-Nqakula and her team were demanding access to the prosecutors' case file in order to better understand the allegations against her.
