Why is Ethiopia's new Red Sea port agreement making Somalia so furious?
- Anger in Somalia has been aroused by an agreement that sees Somaliland leasing a naval port in the Red Sea to Ethiopia. Self-governing Somaliland is a breakaway state that Somalia claims belongs to its own region in the north.
- The port agreement agreed a day earlier, according to Mogadishu, would escalate tensions and jeopardise peace in the larger Horn of Africa, therefore the government called for "deliberations" on the matter on Tuesday.
- Feelings about the port agreement are already running high. Somalis took to the streets of Mogadishu to protest against the deal on Wednesday.
Egypt intends to grow its new capital as its first citizens begin to arrive.
- The president of the business in charge of the project claimed that Egypt is getting ready to spend billions on tripling the size of the opulent new capital it is creating in the desert 45 kilometres (28 miles) east of Cairo, where the first residents are beginning to arrive.
Ethiopia clarifies the necessity of the MoU with Somaliland and says the response was not unexpected.
- Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland to obtain 20 square kilometres of territory to access the sea across the Gulf of Aden, Ethiopia has been subject to increasing criticism from various sources.
- Ethiopia's action was viewed by Somalia as a breach of its territorial integrity and sovereignty. Actors like the Arab League and Egypt struck a chord with similar voices.
- The MoU was deemed unsuitable by the African Union itself.

Due to protests in Oubari, two oil fields were closed in Libya
- The protest in Southern Libya has led to shutting down of two of Libya's oilfields, namely, Sharara oilfield and el-Feel, on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
- Among the demands of the protesting citizens are hiring young people with experience in the oil industry and establishing a refinery in Fezzan specifically designed to address the ongoing shortages of petrol and petrol.

Zambian schools shut for three more weeks due to cholera
Schools in Zambia will remain closed for an additional three weeks to avoid the spread of Cholera which has already claimed over 128 lives.
The Ministry of Education announced on Thursday that both primary and secondary students, originally scheduled to return next Monday, will now resume classes on January 29.
