French President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the National Assembly and called for fresh elections following significant gains by the far-right in the European Parliamentary elections.
Macron's Renaissance party and allies suffered heavy losses, securing only 15.2% of the vote, while the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) achieved 31.5%, winning 40% of the available seats.
Macron emphasized the need for a clear majority to govern effectively and acknowledged the concerns of the people. He stated he would not seek re-election in 2027.
New elections will be held on June 30 with a run-off on July 7.
The decision received mixed reactions; Marine Le Pen welcomed it, while others, like Socialist Party's Raphaƫl Glucksmann, criticized it as a dangerous gamble.
The Paris stock market reacted negatively, with the CAC 40 index dropping by 2.4%.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Announces July 4 General Election Amid Economic Optimism

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on May 22 that a general election will be held on July 4, potentially ending a 14-year Conservative government.
Sunak highlighted recent economic improvements, including inflation hitting a three-year low and positive GDP growth, as evidence of his successful leadership.
Sunak framed the election as a choice between continued progress and an uncertain future, citing global dangers such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, technology competition with China, and Islamist extremism.
Sunak criticized the opposition Labour Party and its leader, Keir Starmer, accusing them of lacking a clear plan for the country's future.
Labour, led by Keir Starmer, is ahead in the polls by twenty points on average. Starmer has repositioned the party closer to the center, distancing it from former leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Political scientist John Curtice compared the Conservatives' current challenge to that faced by John Major in 1997, highlighting the threat from the right-wing Reform UK party. The UK Parliament will be dissolved by King Charles III on May 30.

ESA Reveals Spectacular Mira HM Sge Star System, Captivating Astronomers
The European Space Agency (ESA) shared a mesmerizing image of the Mira HM Sge star system, located 3,400 light-years away in the Sagitta constellation, featuring a red giant and its white dwarf companion.
Dubbed a "cosmic dance of fire and ice," the red giant sheds material onto the white dwarf, creating a brilliant display. The system first became notably bright in 1975 due to a nova-like outburst.
The resulting red nebulosity from the stellar wind spans about one-quarter light-year, and the gas bridge between the stars is approximately 3.2 billion kilometers long.
Hubble's ultraviolet data reveals the white dwarf and its accretion disk have heated from below 220,000 degrees Celsius in 1989 to over 250,000 degrees Celsius today, while paradoxically fading slightly in brightness.
The now-retired SOFIA telescope detected water moving at 28 kilometers per second, suggesting a rapidly swirling disk of material around the white dwarf. Infrared data also showed the red giant's dust production stabilized shortly after the outburst.
These observations from Hubble and SOFIA are helping astronomers piece together the complex interactions and behaviors within this enigmatic stellar system.
NATO Expresses Concern Over Russia's Support for North Korea's Missile and Nuclear Programs

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg raised concerns about potential Russian support for North Korea's missile and nuclear programs, during a joint press briefing with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea for the first time in 24 years to strengthen trade and security ties with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and support the North against the U.S.
The U.S. accused North Korea of supplying missiles and munitions to Russia for use in Ukraine, emphasizing North Korea's involvement in supporting Russia's war efforts.
Stoltenberg highlighted the interconnectedness of European and Asian security challenges, pointing to China's and North Korea's support for Russia. He called for consequences for China to address its support for Russia's war economy.
White House officials, including John Kirby and Karine Jean-Pierre, expressed deep concerns about the growing Russia-North Korea cooperation and its potential impact on the Korean Peninsula's stability.
Blinken described Putin's visit to Pyongyang as a sign of desperation for support in his war against Ukraine and called for a halt to China's support for Russia's defense industry.
U.S. officials, including Kurt Campbell and Bonnie Jenkins, speculated on what Russia might offer North Korea in exchange for weapons, with possibilities including hard currency, energy, or advanced military technologies.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's ceasefire offer for Ukraine, describing it as "propaganda" rather than a genuine effort for peace.
The G7 summit concluded with a deal for a USD 50 billion loan to Ukraine, with contributions primarily from the US, UK, Canada, and possibly Japan, using frozen Russian assets in Europe as collateral.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected Putin's conditions for a ceasefire, which included withdrawing Ukrainian troops from annexed regions and abandoning NATO membership plans.
The summit also addressed issues including the Israel-Hamas conflict, migration, and efforts against human trafficking.
