An article from The Economist on the captioned subject.

Abe Shinzo( 67 years),the former PM of Japan was killed by a lone gunman while addressing a political rally ahead of the Parliamentary elections to be held on 10/7/22. He was the country’s most consequential PM in decades and also the first PM to be killed in post WWII era. He has also been the PM for the longest period- 2006-2007 and again from 2012-2020. In childhood,  he aspired to become an actor but he was already cut out for a role in national politics. His father Abe Shintaro was a former Foreign Minister. His grand father Kishida Nebusuke was PM from 1957-1960.

Abe Shinzo completed unfinished work in Japan after its defeat in WWII. Abe Shinzo during his premiership, dismantled some of the pacifist policies which Japan followed for quite sometime, soon after WWII. He was a realist nationalist  PM. He continued to take interest in rejuvenating LDP( Liberal Democratic Party founded in 1955 which ruled over Japan all along except for a very brief period- 1993-1994 and again from 2009-2012) , the political party to which he was greatly attached. It is unfortunate that in the midst of election campaign, he had to lose his life. Gun-firing in Japan is very rare. During the year 2021, there was only one case of gun-firing. Perhaps in year 2022, the present gun-firing case would be the last!

The article is full of tributes paid to  Abe Shinzo who ruled from the hearts of the people. It is sad that he had to lose his life at the hands of a gunman, dressed as a journalist and present  at the election gathering. The motive of killing is still not known even though the gunman has been arrested.
