Switzerland reports $112 mil in frozen Syrian assets

The Swiss government stated Wednesday that 99 million Swiss francs ($112 million) worth of Syrian assets are now frozen in Switzerland, the majority of which have been barred for years.

Since Switzerland ratified European Union sanctions against Syria in May 2011, the majority of the amount has been frozen, according to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco).

In response to an EU move, Switzerland this week added three additional individuals to its list of individuals subject to sanctions relating to Syria.

Switzerland supports UN Gaza ceasefire resolution

Switzerland supported a successful resolution passed by the UN General Assembly that demanded the immediate release of the hostages and an unconditional, long-term peace in the Gaza Strip.

Late Thursday in New York, Switzerland and 157 other members approved the text. Despite 13 abstentions and nine votes against, including from the US and Israel, the resolution was approved.

UN General Assembly resolutions have political symbolic value but are not legally enforceable. The body passed identical resolutions twice last year, but this time the demands are more forceful and the language of the text is clearer.

Swiss parliament rejects UN migration pact

The parliament has decided that Switzerland should not ratify the UN Global Compact on Migration.

Even though the document is not legally obligatory on the Confederation's immigration policy, the House of Representatives rejected it on Thursday by a vote of 121 to 65, following the Senate's lead.

The Pact is a comprehensive framework for action to enhance international cooperation in the subject of migration, and it was adopted by the UN in December 2018.

Belgium ordered to pay reparations for colonial kidnappings

Five mixed-race ladies who were taken from their families during the Belgian Congo's colonial era were ordered to receive reparations from the government by a Belgian court.

According to a governmental policy, the women, who are now in their 70s, were taken from their mothers when they were young and placed in orphanages.

A "plan to systematically search for and abduct children born to a Black mother and a white father" was alleged by the court.

Judges declared the kidnappings "an inhumane act of persecution" and declared this a crime against humanity on Monday.

Tibetans in Switzerland and Liechtenstein Commemorate the 76th International Human Rights Day with Peaceful Demonstration

The Tibetan Community of Switzerland and Liechtenstein planned a nonviolent protest in front of the UN Human Rights Council and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva on December 10, 2024, the 76th International Human Rights Day.

They encouraged the Chinese authorities to shut down permanent schools and demanded human rights in Tibet. After singing the Tibetan national song and organising a nonviolent march, the event started with a gathering in front of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights office in Geneva.

A representative from the Tibet Bureau in Geneva, Thinley Chukki, took part in the protest. They gathered in front of the world conference and then honoured the Tibetan martyrs with a moment of silence.

Austria Halts Asylum Processing for Syrians Following Assad’s Ouster

Austria’s caretaker government suspended the processing of asylum applications for Syrians after Syrian rebels seized Damascus, leading to President Bashar al-Assad's flight to Russia.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner announced plans for a "programme of orderly repatriation and deportation" to Syria, though no specific methods were disclosed.

The government also paused family reunification for Syrian refugees, affecting 1,146 pending applications.

The move reflects Austria’s conservative People's Party's hardline stance on immigration, which aligns with the policies of the far-right Freedom Party (FPO).

Austria Lifts Veto on Bulgaria and Romania’s Full Schengen Membership

Austria has lifted its veto on Bulgaria and Romania becoming full members of the Schengen free-travel area, clearing the way for EU interior ministers to formalize the decision.

Bulgaria and Romania had previously joined "Schengen Air" in March 2024, with air and maritime border checks lifted. The latest move allows land border entry into the Schengen zone.

Austria claims its initial veto prompted stronger border controls, resulting in a significant drop in illegal border crossings — from 70,000 interceptions last year to 4,000 this year.

The Austrian Interior Ministry framed the shift as a success in addressing illegal immigration, crediting its initial opposition for the enhanced border control measures.

Belgium Found Guilty of Crimes Against Humanity for Colonial-Era Abduction of Children in Congo

A Brussels appeals court ruled that Belgium committed crimes against humanity by kidnapping thousands of mixed-race children from their Black mothers during colonial rule in Congo (1908-1960). Five women, now in their 70s and 80s, were awarded €50,000 each as compensation for "moral damage" caused by their forced separation from their families.

Thousands of mixed-race children, known as métis, were taken from their mothers and placed in Catholic institutions where they were labeled "children of sin." The children suffered malnutrition, abuse, and loss of identity, with some being told their fathers were dead or that "the state" was their parent.

After Belgium's government apologized for its role in 2019, five survivors, including Lea Tavares Mujinga and Simone Ngalula, pursued legal action. Initially, a lower court rejected their claim in 2021, but they won on appeal in 2024, marking a landmark legal acknowledgment of Belgium’s colonial crimes.

The ruling is being hailed as a historic victory and a precedent in European legal history. It represents the first time a European court has condemned a colonial-era state for crimes against humanity, setting a legal precedent for addressing colonial injustices.

"The Belgian government took my youth away," said plaintiff Monique Bitu Bingi. The ruling offers some relief for survivors and their families, with many hoping it will prompt further accountability for colonial-era abuses.

French Government Collapses After No-Confidence Vote Against PM Michel Barnier

The French government has fallen after Prime Minister Michel Barnier was ousted in a no-confidence vote, the first such collapse since 1962. The motion, backed by 331 MPs, came just three months after Barnier’s appointment by President Emmanuel Macron.

The crisis was sparked when Barnier invoked special powers to pass a €60bn deficit-cutting budget, drawing opposition from the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) and far-right National Rally (RN), who called it "toxic" and undemocratic.

Barnier must resign but may remain as caretaker PM. President Macron faces pressure to appoint a successor quickly, especially with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump visiting Paris for the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral.

With no parliamentary majority and no new elections until July, the next prime minister will face similar challenges. While Macron is not directly affected, Marine Le Pen warned that ignoring voters' voices could increase calls for his resignation.

Russia to Halt Gas Supplies to Austria from Saturday: Key Highlights

Russia will suspend gas deliveries to Austria via Ukraine, effectively ending Moscow’s last significant gas flows to Europe. This move follows Ukraine’s refusal to extend its gas transit agreement with Gazprom, aimed at cutting Russia's war profits.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer assured citizens that no household will face heating issues, as gas storage is sufficient. Energy supplier OMV has prepared for the cut-off, securing imports from Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Hungary and Slovakia, which also rely on gas via Ukraine, will face changes. Hungary already imports gas via the TurkStream pipeline, while Slovakia will need to adjust its energy sources.

The gas suspension is seen as a strategic flex by Russia amid growing pressure for a Ukraine ceasefire. EU officials stated that member states have alternative supply options, reducing reliance on Russian gas.

North Korea reaches for familiar playbook in talks with Japan

Within the span of just two days, North Korea went from raising the prospect of a leaders summit with Japan to dismissing it outright, with leader Kim Jong Un’s powerful sister saying Pyongyang will refuse “any contact and negotiations” with Tokyo in the future.

Kim Yo Jong’s remarks on Tuesday, just a day after she revealed that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had requested a summit with her brother, were widely seen as part of a familiar playbook employed by the North as it seeks the upper hand in negotiations Tokyo hopes could eventually resolve the long-festering abductee issue and ease strained tensions, including over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs.

In remarks carried by state-run media Kim Yo Jong, a key adviser to her brother, said North Korea will refuse “any contact and negotiations” with Japan.

China faces US$50 billion shortfall in Southeast Asia as belt and road funds miss their mark

A sizeable sum of infrastructure funding China has allocated to Southeast Asia has gone unfulfilled thanks to political instability in recipient countries, poor engagement with local stakeholders and a declining appetite for energy projects powered by fossil fuels, a new study from the Lowy Institute has found.

The gap between what Beijing has committed to and what it has delivered has raised “uncertainty” about the future of the China-led Belt and Road Initiative, where Southeast Asian nations are key participants, the Australian think tank said on Wednesday.

“This difference amounts to US$50 billion in unfulfilled project financing, with more than half allocated to projects that have been cancelled, downsized, or otherwise seem unlikely to proceed,” said Alexandre Dayant and Grace Stanhope, who co-wrote the report.

As Julian Assange's legal saga drags on, the solution to it could lie outside court

Julian Assange's supporters have described his ongoing incarceration as "punishment by process".
And once again, the WikiLeaks founder — whose physical and mental health has deteriorated during the five years he's spent inside Belmarsh Prison in London — has seen the legal process to appeal his extradition to the US drawn out even further.

While Assange has not run out of options in the UK justice system yet, Tuesday's decision means a political solution for Assange's situation is more pressing than ever.

$3b money laundering accused gets 6 new charges for submitting forged statements to Swiss bank

Vang Shuiming, one of the 10 accused in Singapore’s largest money laundering case, was handed six more charges on March 27.
Vang, 42, also known as Wang Shuiming, allegedly submitted forged financial statements from two companies – Xiamen Yetian Trading and Xiamen Likanghang Trading – to Bank Julius Baer & Co’s Singapore branch on July 19, 2022, as supporting documentation.
Bank Julius Baer & Co is a Swiss private bank that offers financing, investment advisory, custodial and wealth management services.

Changes to UK import controls from 31 January 2024

In August 2023, the UK Government published its Border Target Operating Model which introduced new customs procedures and import controls for live animals; food of animal origin; germinal products; animal by-products; plants; plant products; fruit; vegetables; and horticulture products imported into Great Britain from Ireland and the rest of the European Union.

There are two important changes to take note of:

Export health certificates and phytosanitary certificates will be required for medium-risk animal products, plants and plant products imported to Great Britain, in line with the UK risk categories.
Your Great Britain importer or Great Britain based agent will need to pre-notify each consignment on the UK’s food and feed sanitary and phytosanitary import system (IPAFFS)

These new UK requirements will be in addition to the existing formalities that apply when exporting goods from Ireland and the EU.

Words and terms such as 'dwarfism,' 'handicapped,' 'the wife of' and 'obesity' have been removed to use more inclusive and less sexist language.
Victor Cageao has led the conservatorship department to look for examples of wording that - in the present time - could be seen as discriminatory or insulting.

Liechtenstein election: Just 23 ballots separate two biggest parties that will now form coalition

The country’s election on Monday was seen - as it has always been - as a two-horse race, with only marginal differences, policy-wise, between the horses.
The two parties that share power at the head of Liechtenstein will now be called upon to form a new coalition.
Each won 35.9% of around 20,000 votes in the parliamentary elections on Sunday, according to the Swiss news agency Keystone-ATS.
The local parliament, the Landtag, which has 25 deputies, must now appoint the government, headed either by Daniel Risch, (VU) or Sabine Monauni (FBP), who would be the first woman to lead the country where women were only granted the right to vote in 1984.

Romania, Bulgaria to partially enter Schengen after striking deal with Austria

Romania and Bulgaria have struck an agreement with Austria to partially join Europe's borderless Schengen travel zone by March 2024, Bucharest and Sofia have confirmed.
The political agreement will allow Romania and Bulgaria to join the Schengen zone by air and sea only, with further negotiations to follow on land borders, the Romanian interior ministry said Wednesday.
Austria had been blocking both countries' accession to Schengen over concerns it could lead to an influx in irregular migrant arrivals in Europe via the Turkish and Western Balkan routes.

Andorra summit: Latin American leaders call for better distribution of coronavirus vaccines

The region has been disproportionately hit by the pandemic, accounting for nearly 30% of the world's COVID-19 deaths.
Representatives of 22 countries from Latin America and Europe’s Iberian Peninsula, in their first, mostly virtual meeting since the pandemic started, called for more equitable access to coronavirus vaccines and flexible funding for their economic recovery.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said he was alarmed by the unequal distribution of vaccines.
“If this dangerous trend of vaccine nationalism and parallel deals continues, vaccination in developing countries could take years, delaying, even more, the world's recovery,” Guterres told the leaders. “The vaccination campaign is the main moral challenge of our times.”

Belgium Becomes Latest Signatory to the Artemis Accords

Belgium has become the latest country to append its signature to the Artemis Accords, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hadja Lahbib, and the Secretary of State for Science Policy, Thomas Dermine, signing the accords yesterday, 23rd of January 2024.
As a State participating in and contributing to European and international space exploration programs, in particular the Artemis program, Belgium considers the Artemis Agreements to be an important political instrument.

Macro Intelligence: nuclear power's new dawn, uranium market hits 16-year high

Uranium, a highly dense metal found in most rocks, is primarily used as fuel in nuclear power plants. The price of uranium has skyrocketed to US$106 per pound, reaching a 16-year high.
This increase is the highest since November 2007, driven by supply concerns and renewed interest in nuclear power. Notably, 22 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and France, have committed to tripling their nuclear capacity by 2050.

Switzerland to remove air border controls with Bulgaria and Romania

Passport checks for people flying to and from Bulgaria and Romania will be abolished at Swiss airports.

Switzerland, India reach deal on FTA

Switzerland and India have reached consensus on a free-trade agreement after 16 years of negotiations, Swiss Economy Minister Guy Parmelin said.
Parmelin traveled to India directly after the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to meet with counterpart Piyush Goyal, according to a post by the Swiss minister on the platform X, formerly Twitter, late Saturday. The outline of a deal was agreed, and officials are working to finalize the details, he said.

Colombia boosts trade with the Netherlands, emerging as a significant export partner

As per the latest DANE report updated to October 2023, Colombia is strengthening its commercial bonds with the Netherlands and the Dutch Caribbean.

Hazardous goods violations lead to fines and parliamentary questions in the Netherlands

The wagons were filled with the hazardous substance Methyl-tert-butyl ether (MBTE), a highly flammable liquid mainly used as an additive in fuel. Upon discovery of the violations, ILT immediately halted the transport due to environmental risks, in particular risk of fire.

The train was supposed to cover large distances in Europe and pass densely populated areas in the Netherlands, exposing large populations to environmental hazards. The train was escorted back to the site where the wagons were loaded from a location near Amsterdam.

Cabinet approves Memorandum of Intent (MoI) between India and Netherlands on cooperation in the field of Medical products Regulation

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was apprised of a Memorandum of Intent (MoI) signed between the Central Drugs standard Control Organization (CDSCO), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, Kingdom of the Netherlands on behalf of Medicines Evaluation Board, Health and Youth Care Inspectorate, Central Committee on research Involving Human Subjects “on cooperation in the field of Medical products Regulation”.
The MoI seeks to establish a framework for fruitful cooperation and exchange of information between the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, Kingdom of the Netherlands on behalf of Medicines Evaluation Board, Health and Youth Care Inspectorate.

France logged record number of asylum requests in 2023, 8% higher

Around 142,500 people applied in total -- including 123,400 for the first time -- and around a third of all requests for protection were accepted, the French Office for the Protection of Refugee and Stateless Persons (OFPRA) said in provisional figures.
Just 131,000 people had applied in 2022, with a slightly lower proportion of 29 percent receiving a positive response."This increase is not specific to France, but comes within a European context," OFPRA director Julien Boucher told AFP.
